Between Bologna and Modena, the flat fields of the Po Valley begin to fold toward the Apennines, and along that gentle gradient lies a stretch of land that has shaped the world’s idea of speed. This is the Motor Valley, home to Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Pagani. On a quiet morning, you can hear it before you see it: an engine note rising from a test track, fading between rows of poplars, returning a moment later a little sharper, a little faster. Generations of engineers here have given their working lives to a single pursuit, performance without compromise.
Motor Valley runs on a specific kind of obsession. Grams are counted, then counted again. Each material is chosen for a reason, placed where its properties matter most and removed wherever it adds nothing. The question on every workbench is always the same: how can this be made better?
A road bike asks that same question, and a rider feels every answer. Stiffness when you sprint out of a hairpin. Calm on a fast descent. Comfort still intact after five hours in the saddle. The ideal frame places each material exactly where it serves the ride, the principle that guides every racing chassis built a few kilometers from Modena’s historic center.
It shouldn’t surprise that the Modena project began with a fellow cyclist. The owner of an Italian carbon manufacturing facility, a lifelong rider and a tifoso of Giovanni Battaglin, approached us with the idea of working together. That conversation opened the door to an engineering team active in motorsport, and to methods rarely applied to handmade bicycles: structural calculation and load analysis borrowed from racing car development, and autoclave processes designed for components that face far greater forces than any road will ever impose.
Working with those engineers took us outside the usual framebuilding playbook. Titanium went where resilience and vibration damping matter most, forged carbon where stiffness and steering precision define the ride. A new kind of oversized lug was designed to join them. The frame that emerged still carries the Officina Battaglin signature: lugged construction, Italian manufacture from start to finish. But its performance belongs to a new category.
The Modena
Strength exactly where it counts
The Modena’s tubes meet at proprietary 3D-printed titanium lugs, designed entirely in-house by Officina Battaglin. Additive manufacturing allows each lug to take shapes that casting or machining could never produce, concentrating material along the paths where loads flow and removing it wherever it would only add weight. The result is structural continuity from one tube to the next, so the frame responds as a single piece every time you stand on the pedals. They are also oversized, the construction that has defined our frames since the Portofino, now reinterpreted in titanium: one glance at the junctions and the Modena is unmistakably a Battaglin, with the depth and glow of a metal finish that carbon alone could never offer.
Stiffness where the ride demands it
The head tube, seat tube and rear triangle of the Modena are made of forged carbon, produced entirely in Italy and cured in an autoclave to racing-grade standards. Each component has a precise role: the head tube stiffens the front end for accurate steering, the seat tube channels your pedaling effort into forward motion, and the rear triangle is shaped for immediate reactivity when you accelerate. Autoclave curing compacts the carbon under heat and pressure, removing voids and delivering the same consistency from one part to the next, the same process trusted for motorsport components. On the road you feel it on a steep ramp or a fast bend, where the bike goes exactly where you point it, the moment you ask. And up close, the marbled texture of forged carbon gives every Modena a surface pattern that no other frame will share.
Ordering process and pricing
The Modena is built in small batches, ensuring the highest quality and close attention to detail throughout construction.
You can order your Modena directly from Officina Battaglin. Once you’ve reserved your frame or your place in the next production batch, our team will then guide you through a professional sizing consultation to identify the right fit among the seven available sizes. Once your size and finish are confirmed, your Modena is completed and custom-finished in Italy in one of the cromovelato finishes available.
Every Modena frameset includes the titanium-carbon frame, carbon fork, headset, thru-axles, cromovelato finish, and the professional sizing consultation. The price for a custom-finished Modena starts at € 6.000*.
*All prices exclude taxes and shipping.
The comfort of titanium
The top tube and down tube are drawn from Columbus Hyperion titanium in Ti-3Al-2.5V alloy (Grade 9), from the Milanese tubing maker whose name has been stamped on Italian racing frames for generations. Grade 9 titanium strikes a rare balance between strength, controlled elasticity and low weight: it filters the road buzz that stiffer materials pass straight to your hands, and it resists fatigue and corrosion for years of riding. Paired with the forged carbon sections, it keeps the complete frame at just 1,290 grams without sacrificing the composure that makes a long ride enjoyable from the first kilometer to the last.
